Royal Parks Foundation-Drinking Fountain Design Competition

July 29, 2020

Royal Parks Foundation Drinking Fountain Competition 2010

Design Concept

Inspired by ripples created through raindrops falling on a still surface of water, our proposal seeks to recreate this beautiful and elegant natural process in the drinking fountain for Royal Parks Foundation.
Our proposed drinking fountain has a form which is a metaphorical interpretation of the rippling effect of water, frozen in time and space. The 1 meter diameter basin is made of marine grade, mirror polished, stainless steel. Through the process/ technique of metal spinning, undulations in the metal surface are created to form a ripple effect. This rippling and undulating effect in the metal surface serves dual purposes. Firstly, the mirror polished stainless steel finish of the undulating surface creates a shimmering effect and reflects the sky and surrounding park context to reinforce the concept and aesthetic effect of water ripples. Secondly, the undulations are designed with peaks and troughs to define an outer ring zone for ergonomic drinking purposes and an inner ring zone for ease of water bottle filling. The rippling undulating effect thus served both aesthetical and functional purposes; it is both a sculpture in the park and a purposeful drinking fountain.
