Flat in Compassvale Link

December 25, 2018

Client’s brief was to create a bright and modern eclectic home that allows her to wind down from her busy work schedule and to also serve as a personal gallery space to display unique collections amassed over years of travelling. Conceptual inspiration was drawn from Esther Stewart’s geometrical paintings which attempt to generate mapping of domestic spaces and the push and pull between abstraction and representation. Similarly, in this project, we see the walls as the medium; at times juxtaposing calm pastel colours against dynamic geometric patterns and others providing a clean muted canvas to contrast against eclectic objects of desire.

A fair amount of energy was spent in the design of both bathrooms. For the common bathroom, selection of terrazzo looking tiles with olive green cabinetry and brass fixtures provides the space with a vintage modernity vibe while the master bathroom choice of large format marble tiles with patterned shadow blue cabinetry and mirrors brings a subtle luxury to it. A bespoke brass + solid timber shelving divider screen was designed and fabricated to be installed between the entrance and living space to reinforce the concept of push and pull. Serving as the main anchoring feature when one enters the flat, it also draws the eyes to look at the layers of textured space (living) beyond. Apart from the divider screen shelving system, a series of built in wardrobes with laminate finish are also designed and fabricated in the master bedroom. They adopt the same principle of the living space walls, serving as a canvas that reveals juxtaposing calm pastel colours against dynamic geometric patterns.

It was fun and exciting to work with our client in furnishing her abode as she already possessed a refined eye for collecting delicious designed items from all her travels. It became apparent for us that the main task was to sieve through her wonderful collections and try to organise them either through complementing or contrasting the vintage with the new; highlighting the overall narrative of modern eclectic. This liberation also allows the marrying of different genres such as having modern dining table and pendant lamp mixing with Eames classic chairs; pairing abstract wall prints from Toronto based artist YangYang Pan with Etch & Bolts sofa and Rail Tv Console with Qeebo rabbit chair.
